Fit the piece to the space

Scribe a cabinet filler to a wavy wall, mark a flooring plank around door casing, or transfer a profile onto trim. The guide follows the existing surface while the pencil marks the shape directly on the material you’ll cut.

How to scribe a cut line

1. Position the workpiece. Hold it level or plumb in the orientation it will sit. Secure it so it stays put while you mark.
2. Set and lock the offset. Pick the wheel or point. Fit your pencil in the sliding holder, set the spacing for the gap you need to cover, and lock the holder. Check the line will stay on the workpiece.
3. Trace, trim, and test-fit. Keep the guide in contact with the surface and keep the tool at a consistent angle as you move. Trim on the waste side of the line, then dry-fit and fine-tune.

Start with the wheel for broad curves and long runs. Switch to the pointed end for small steps and tight details. Reset and check the offset after switching ends.

How is this different from a pin contour gauge?

A pin gauge holds a short section of the profile for transfer. A contour scribe follows the surface while your pencil draws a continuous line on the workpiece.
