DIY underbed Shoe Storage

Build a simple under bed show storage with storage. It has a plexiglass cover so you can see inside and moveable dividers to keep the shows organized.

Difficulty : Moderate

Materials :

Wood Products

  • Plywood (1) – 3/4" Thick, Half Sheet → 19 mm x Half Sheet Size (typically 1220 mm x 1220 mm)
  • Board (2) – 1x6 x 96" → 19 mm x 152 mm x 2438 mm
  • Board (4) – 1x4 x 96" → 19 mm x 102 mm x 2438 mm

Hardware & Supplies

  • Plexiglass (1) – 3' x 3' → 914 mm x 914 mm
  • Casters (4)
  • Hinges (2)
  • Cabinet Pull (1)
  • 36 1/4" Pocket Hole Screws
  • 20 3/4" Wood Screws

Cut List & Parts :

  • Base Plywood (1) – 3/4" x 29 3/4" x 33 3/4" → 19 mm x 756 mm x 857 mm
  • Box Sides (Long) (2) – 1" x 6" x 33 3/4" → 25 mm x 152 mm x 857 mm
  • Box Sides (Short) (2) – 1" x 6" x 31 3/4" → 25 mm x 152 mm x 806 mm
  • Lid Side (Long) (2) – 1" x 4" x 31 1/4" → 25 mm x 102 mm x 794 mm
  • Lid Side (Short) (2) – 1" x 4" x 30 1/4" → 25 mm x 102 mm x 768 mm
  • Long Center Divider (1) – 1" x 4" x 33 3/4" → 25 mm x 102 mm x 857 mm
  • Short Dividers (4) – 1" x 4" x 29 3/4" → 25 mm x 102 mm x 756 mm
  • Plexiglass (1) – 29 1/4" x 33 1/4" → 743 mm x 844 mm

Directions :

  • Step 1 - Build the box

Assemble the box for the shoe organizer using the 3/4" base plywood and the 1" x 6" sides. The pocket holes are all around the underside of the plywood as shown in the schematic.
Join using 1 1/4" pocket hole screws and wood glue. Ensure everything is square.

    Step 1

    2 - Build the box- 2

Also add pocket hole screws to the insides of the opposite sides as show in the schematic.

    Step 2

3 - Build frame for Lid

Build a frame for the lid using the 1x4 boards using 1 1/4" pocket hole screws and wood glue. Ensure everything is square.

    Step 3

    4 - Attach plexiglass

Attach plexiglass to the inside of the lid using 3/4" wood screws.
To do this - pre-drill holes slowly in the plexiglass and then add screws. Be careful not to over tighten.

Note - you can also route out the insides of the lid before building the frame to inset the Plexiglas.. I wanted to keep this a simple build that didn't involve a lot of tools.

    Step 4

    5 - Cut dividers

Cut up the 1" x 4" dividers for the organizer as shown in the picture. This gives a 10 shoe organizer. You can add extra slits in the long divider to add more options for the arrangement.
The dividers fit snug and hence are not attached to the box.

    Step 5

    6 - Finishing touches

Sand and stain or paint per your choice.

Attach the lid to the box using hinges.
Add casters on the bottom and a pull to the front of the box.
